elliott - false cathedrals (2000)

"bound to own all of our dreams, intimate love affair with common man themes, and you'll come quick, and you'll come here now a fool to make it all erase."
genre: midwest emo, post-hardcore
first time listened: mid to late 2020
favorite song: calm americans
rating: 4.5/5

elliott (not to be confused with elliott smith) was a emo band from kentucky during the late 90s to early 2000s. false cathedrals was their second album released and developed a more atmospheric and cinematic sound from their previous album (us songs - 1998). these were one of the albums that got me through late 2020 and up to mid 2021. their vocalist chris higdon has become one of my favorites from his emotional/angelic singing which his type of singing to me isn't as replicated to other emo vocalists (many vocalists are more similar to chris simpson/whiney type than they are higdon imo). the only thing that stops this album from being 5/5 is that i sorta trail off around the middle tracks (usually skipping them when relistening), but they aren't bad just not holding alot of replay value. i also have a feeling this album has some religious/spritual meaning behind it, its obviously called false cathedrals but some songs contain religous references like "blessed by your own ghost" and "lipstick stigmata". and (while being just rather very assumptive) the opening interlude "voices" reminds of hearing a church choir, and bassist for the band jonathan mobley even did a interview with this site about the band's legacy and christianity. overall its a good listen, and i also recommend their first album us songs.

i also just learned this while writing this, but the band is reforming to do a show at a festival which makes me very excited but not suprised (so many midwest emo bands like to come back after like 10-20 years atp).
